Food and Drink at Christmas

This is one of the best times of the year to indulge in a few favourites, and relish the wonderful array of food and drink available over the winter.

Christmas is a time for celebration – and sharing with family and friends.  Others of course see this time as an occasion to splash out on the finer things in life.

We’ve teamed up some of the more popular Christmas food items with some glorious English wine.  There are several suggestions, and some of the wines are available nationally – but remember – you can always order the wines on line direct from the vineyards or a number of mail order wine companies!

Some suggestions on what to drink with your Christmas Feast from Marcus Sharpe, the winemaker at Denbies Wine Estate

Pre-dinner drinks

the limited edition Sparkling Rose Cuvee (£17.99), crushed raspberry and strawberry erupt in fine bubbles

Canapes and smoked salmon

Surrey Gold (£6.99)- this off dry aromatic wine with a hint of spice compliments the savoury appetisers

Melon and other fruit Ortega (£9.99), the slightly aromatic oak flavour is a perfect match for the sweetness of fruit appetisers
Roast Turkey or Goose

Redlands (£9.50), a full bodied red that can withstand the diverse combination of flavours of the traditional Christmas meal

Christmas Pudding

Bacchus(£12.99), the combination of gooseberry and capsicum flavours of this wine bring out the fruit flovours of the pudding

turkey           Tempting Receipes.........

There are some very tempting receipes to try out over the festive season which either include English Wines or have suggestions on which wines to drink with them.

How about Mushroom Broth to start with

                                 Followed by Drunken Partridge and

                                 To finish: Cranberry Almond Tart

All of which include a good glug of English red wine

Peter Dart from Stanlake Park offers the following wine ideas to accompany your Christmas Turkey Feast

Roast Turkey

Personally I think our lighter red wines (Pinot Noir and Ruscombe) go really well with Turkey. Or the Kings Fume or Regatta if white is preferred.

... and some other tempting recommendations to accompany your Christmas feasts.

Pre dinner drinks

Kir Royale or

some of our delicious English fizz, available direct from vineyards, Waitrose, The Wine Society, Marks & Spencer, Bery Bros & Rudd to name but a few outlets

Smoked Salmon A crisp Bacchus to cut through that delicous oily fish.  Or something with a touch of spiciness, such as Schonburger or Ortega.  Alternatively try Pinot Blanc which has backbone and minerality - try Chapel Down Pinot Blanc 2007.
Turkey and all the trimmings A fruity red, such as Denbies Redlands, Bookers Dark Harvest, Brightwell Oxford Regatta or Stanlake Ruscombe Red.
Christmas Pudding Prior to serving Christmas Pudding there is no better way to prepare the palate than a small glass of chilled Late Harvest or Dessert Wine which could be either Chapel Down Nectar or Astley Late Harvest.  Alternatively why not try an innovative new sweet still cider - Blenheim Orange Dessert Cider 2008 from Once Upon  A Tree
Coffee A tincture or two of Somerset Cider Brandy
