English Wine Producers is gearing up for another packed programme of trade activities in 2017, as well as enhancing the profile of the industry through added initiatives such as a new national wine competition in May.
Julia Trustram Eve, marketing director at English Wine Producers (EWP), whose members represent some 80% of volume produced in the UK, comments:
“There is a phenomenal vibe around English wine at the moment. We are seeing increased availability of English wines through retailers and on-trade across the UK, clearly showing that consumer demand is there – people are making a conscious decision to choose English wine. Another exciting area of growth is export, with new markets opening around the world, and more wines being shipped.”
English Wine Producers Annual Trade and Press Tasting, One Great George Street, London, Monday 8th May
This key trade event showcases the largest number of English wines under one roof, featuring established and emerging players. The ever-popular central tasting table gives trade and press an opportunity to benchmark a wide range of wines, arranged by style, from across the country. This year will feature innovative masterclasses and topical debate on industry developments. The 2016 harvest data will also be announced on the day.
Welcome to England at ProWein, 19th-21st March
With exports rising and new markets opening around the world, overseas initiatives are becoming a key part of EWP’s marketing activity. English Wine Producers will be returning to ProWein this year with Bolney Wine Estate, Chapel Down, Gusbourne, Hattingley Valley and Ridgeview showing their top wines to international buyers.
Julia adds: " ProWein is a key trade fair for us; it provides the ideal platform to engage directly with an international audience, as well as UK trade.”
English Wine Producers at London Wine Fair, 22nd-24th May
Last year, organisers of the London Wine Fair highlighted the Welcome to England stand as one of the most popular at Olympia. English Wine Producers will be returning to what is the UK’s most important trade fair with a number of high-profile producers. Look out for some exciting stand activities over the three days.
English Wine Week, UK-wide generic campaign, 27th May-4th June
Last year’s English Wine Week saw the highest trade participation ever and interest in getting involved in 2017 is growing already. Vineyards, retailers, restaurants, bars and wine educators across the UK are busy planning this year’s events. This year will see a drive by English Wine Producers to encourage the on-trade to offer English wine By the Glass and the off-trade to offer their customers in-store sampling, as well as to work more closely with local wines and vineyards.
“This year, we want to work closely with the trade to find exciting ways to engage their consumers,” says Julia Trustram Eve. “We know English Wine Week offers a great opportunity for trade and producers alike to encourage more people to discover English wines.”
A new consumer-facing industry initiative being launched this year is its new-look national competition, the UK Wine Awards. This replaces the industry’s long-standing competition with a more outward-facing, consumer-focused approach, that will recognise and celebrate the many styles produced in the UK. With headline judges and new categories and timing, the competition will raise the profile for wines from across England and Wales. Further details will be announced shortly.
