Nyetimber and Hattingley Valley have been celebrating after picking up a trophy apiece at the Awards Dinner (14th September 2017) of the Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships 2017. In front of a gathering of over 120 international winemakers, producers and journalists at Vintner’s Hall Nyetimber 2009 Classic Cuvée (Jeroboam) was named Best English Sparkling Wine and Hattingley 2011 Blancs de Blancs (Magnum) was declared World Champion Blancs de Blancs.

This makes Hattingley Valley the first English wine producer to win two World Champion titles in this prestigious competition, with their Rose 2011 crowned World Champion Vintage Rosé in CSWWC2014.

Founder and head judge Tom Stevenson said: “After a hardly fought contest, uncovering some exceptional sparkling wines from 29 different countries, we are delighted to recognise not just one but two English wines for their outstanding world-class quality!”

2017 was a ground-breaking year for the Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships, with entries from more countries than ever before. A total of 17 trophies were awarded from 82 Best in Class winners, including 10 National Champions and 4 World Champions by Style.

Stevenson said, “It’s our mission not just to promote world class wines, but also to discover and reward new and exciting wines from established and emerging regions across the world.

“Although we stick rigidly to recognising and publishing only Gold and Silver medals, to ensure that each and every winning wine is very special, we also want to encourage those that produce Bronze level quality wines from emerging regions or established regions with very little history of sparkling wine production. It’s very hard for them to gauge how they are progressing when they have no local competition of world-class quality. This is where the CSWWC brings added value, providing them with feedback and consistent, objective and authoritative assessment from the same three sparkling wine specialists each year.”

UK wine producers didn’t just triumph in terms of trophies, they also did extremely well in terms of Gold and Silver Medals with a total of 30 medals won. With a further 7 best in class winners, including Alder Ridge Vineyard, Harrow and Hope, Hattingley Valley, Nyetimber and Plumpton Estate all winning the best in class award for different categories.

Alder Ridge’s 2013 Blanc de Noirs was awarded the best Blanc de Noirs English Sparkling Wine and one of only 3 Blanc de Noirs Sparkling Wines worldwide to have won a Gold medal.

Tom Newey, CEO of Cobbs Farm Co. Ltd commented “We were incredibly fortunate to have been invited to the recent awards ceremony, where representatives from the very best Champagne and Sparkling Wine houses from around the world were gathered. Winning the Gold and Silver medals was already a huge feather in our cap, but to have then been given the title of having the best English Blanc de Noirs, we were blown away! Yet again I have to pay tribute to the many people involved in tirelessly managing our vineyard and wines on a day to day basis - this award is for them as well as all the other UK vineyards helping to put English Sparkling Wine firmly on the map.”
