What is the geography and climate of the Welsh wine region?

Many of the vineyards in Wales are planted on South facing slopes in order to protect the grapes from the worst of the weather. The climate in Wales is warmer than most places on the same latitude however the vineyards still experience more cold and wet weather than most European wine producers.

The Wales wine region is heavily influenced by maritime weather. Prevailing Westerly winds drive a lot of rainfall from the Atlantic Ocean onto the Welsh vineyards. The average temperatures in the Welsh wine region are also low in comparison to the French wine regions and therefore affects the amount of sugar that is produced in the grapes. Lower sugar levels in the grapes reduces the amount of alcohol that can be produced naturally and sometimes additional sugar is added to increase the alcohol content.

Many of the vineyards in Wales are planted on South facing slopes to maximise their exposure to the sun. These slopes also protect the vineyards from the harshest of weather that passes over Wales.
